Fireflies
When I was little I would spend the last few minutes before bed out in the front yard under the trees trying to catch Fireflies. I would collect them in a glass jar with a lid or in a little plastic container (with breathing holes of course). I would sleep with them on my bedside table waking throughout the night to see their glowing dance and then setting them free when morning came. There was something so wonderful about the little glowing bugs. Even now I still anticipate the first fireflies of the season. Whenever I see one it takes me back to those summer evenings with the smell of a fresh cut lawn lingering and the careful dance that I would perform to catch a Firefly. I think that they are just incredible little bugs that the Lord created for a child’s heart of wonder and awe. I think that He even made them for us fast paced adults so that we would remember the simple wonder of His works. Even the Fireflies give Him praise as they dance through dusk with their light shining.
Aren’t they wonderful? I remember the first time I saw them…in Charlottesville, VA. I woke up for some reason in the night and looked outside…and I really wondered if they were space creatures or something.- Martians came to mind. Dad still laughs about that. They always make me think of how AMAZING our Creator is!

YOu know if it weren’t for a trip to Ohio, I don’t know that I would have ever seen a firefly…we just don’t have those magical little glow bugs out on the west coast. However, now that I’m all grown up if I were to see them, I would try to catch them…maybe you could still take some time once and awhile and catch them and put them in Charis’ room…so that as she grows up she can continue your childhood memory.

Wow! Where did time go? I had forgotten your love of fireflies. Pretty soon little Charis will be sharing this wonderful memory with you as she catches her first fireflies. I will never forget the times at my grandmothers house catching fireflies with all my cousins. Only problem was – they couldn’t come in the house. Our Granny made us leave them on the front porch. Pooh! Note for future reference – Charis is welcome to bring fireflies into this Granny’s house anytime she wants to!!!

We have no fireflies in Florida! I still am not fully accepting this fact.
Please to catch some for us!! Actually, I did get to see some at Rick & Katy’s wedding this weekend–whew!
I can’t wait until Charis can catch them too! It is amazing to see and think about how each and every little thing was made to glorify God.
